Palace: River and Stone Variant

In 2022 my wife and I played a lot of Palace during third-annual SpielMas festival.

We played with a deck of cards designed by Beth Sobel called “River and Stone” that celebrates the mystical beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

But the deck came with four extra cards: two jokers, a “Have Fun!” card, and another card with the same design on either side.

Playing with just two players, we wanted to find a way to include a bit more interactivity and unpredictability into the game. We began to playtest a couple of ideas as to how to incorporate these four cards into the standard game of Palace.

The result has been a hit ever since. We have epic back-and-forth battles that are always close and have lots of replayability.

Buy a Deck

Back in 2022, Beth was running a Kickstarter campaign to sell her first decks of cards.

My latest research finds very few places still sell her decks. I recommend Blue Highway Games in Seattle WA to get your deck in time for the fifth-annual SpielMas festival.
